Sam Allardyce compares Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to Brendan Rodgers’ failed title challengers as they have ‘fear of winning Premier League’
Liverpool are starting to show the same ‘fear of winning the league’ as they did under Brendan Rodgers the last time they came close to ending their championship drought, according to Sam Allardyce. The Reds dropped more points on Sunday with Everton holding them to a 0-0 draw in the second Merseyside derby of the season.Klopp claimed Liverpool’s Merseyside derby performance was hindered by the wind3

They remain with just one defeat to their name in 2018/19, but Liverpool have drawn with Leicester, West Ham, Manchester United and Everton since the end of January, and they now sit behind Manchester City with the same number of games played for the first time since December 7.Jurgen Klopp’s side have the easier run in, but Liverpool’s recent results – last week’s 5-0 rout of Watford aside – have many favouring City to finish top and claim back-to-back Premier League titles. It was City who also pipped Liverpool to the title on the previous occasion they were serious challengers, under Brendan Rodgers in the 2013/14 season. The Etihad club finished two points clear of Liverpool, who were struck by nerves in the final weeks after sitting top on the back of an 11-match winning streak.Chelsea rocked up at Anfield and won 2-0 in a match which will go down in history due to Steven Gerrard’s fateful slip, while the Reds then let a three-goal lead slip in the final 11 minutes of a trip to Crystal Palace to all but end their chances of winning a first ever Premier League title.Liverpool’s failed title challenge summed up in one image3

Rodgers’ side failed to deal with the pressure on them to end this championship drought, and Allardyce believes this current Liverpool side are suffering from the same kind of fear.“The pressure is enormous,” Allardyce told Monday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.

  • Liverpool vs TOTTENHAM (March 31)

“Liverpool have only lost one game this season, and it looks to me like the fear of winning the league is as it was with Brendan [Rodgers] a few years ago.“That is the big hurdle Klopp certainly faces – how do I mentally get my team over the line to try and win the league.“We thought theyd overcome those jitters in midweek when they won 5-0 [against Watford], but there were one or two moments yesterday where you thought they were going to win the game – but clinically they werent good enough.Rodgers watched on from the sidelines as Liverpool’s title challenge collapsed3

“It looks like a little bit of fear to me.”Liverpool failed to challenge at the top end of the table the year after their unsuccessful title bid, and Rodgers was sacked early into the 2015/16 campaign. He returned to English football last week as the new Leicester City manager, but was beaten on his first Premier League match since October 2015 with Watford downing the Foxes on Sunday afternoon.

So this is the calm before the storm. Liverpool resume their Premier League title challenge on Sunday when they welcome Chelsea to Anfield in what could be a match that makes or breaks their chances of pipping Manchester City to top spot. But according to the latest Allez Les Rouges podcast panel, there is no need for concern.
