Manchester United news: Which players should be sold and who should stay this summer? Paul Pogba, David de Gea and others assessed
It’s safe to say the Manchester United squad is in major need of a clear out in the summer.Too many of the current line-up look disinterested and that was especially evident on the weekend as they were pummelled 4-0 by Everton.Man United stars looked pretty clueless against Everton on Sunday8
Man United stars looked pretty clueless against Everton on Sunday
Man United ran 8.03km less than the Toffees players during the game – and the result is the clearest indication yet that perhaps changing the players, rather than the manager, must be a priority now.Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will no doubt be given funds to formulate his own squad in the summer, but he must now take a bold stance and let go of some of the deadwood.Ander Herrera as well as Antonio Valencia look likely to depart when their contracts expire, with the former heading to PSG, so who else will follow him through the exit and who do the Red Devils need to keep in what is sure to be a busy window? talkSPORT.com has given its verdict…

David de Gea

Verdict: KeepAlthough he isn’t having his best season between the sticks, De Gea is an integral part of the United team and he is one of the only genuinely world class talents in their line-up.Old Trafford chiefs need to sort out his contract situation as quickly as possible, though, as the longer it is uncertain the more unrest there will be around the club.

Ashley Young

Verdict: SellYoung has simply been at the club too long and United must part ways with him in the summer. He has been a great servant to the club since his move from Aston Villa in 2011, but he doesn’t possess the quality needed to get the Red Devils back amongst Europe’s elite.Young has been a loyal servant to United but he must be let go in the summer8
Young has been a loyal servant to United but he must be let go in the summer

Victor Lindelof

Verdict: KeepAlthough his form has dipped of late, Lindelof must stay at United as he has unquestionable talent, which was evident during the ‘new manager bounce’ when Solskjaer was appointed. His form will become more consistent once he gets better defenders alongside him, but he should certainly remain with the club in the summer.

Chris Smalling

Verdict: SellSmalling, like Young, is another player who has been at the club too long. The 29-year-old has been a good player for the Red Devils at best, but a new centre-back must be acquired as no good sides can compete for countless trophies with average players at the heart of the back line.

Phil Jones

Verdict: SellJones is not good enough to play for United and must be allowed to leave the club.He is a great professional who gives his all for the team, but he has not solved United’s defensive defensive problems and must be sold.

Diogo Dalot

Verdict: KeepDalot is one player United fans can genuinely be excited about. He is by no means the finished article, but he has shown glimpses of great quality this season and could become a mainstay on the right flank for years to come.Another right-back with experience, perhaps Aaron Wan-Bissaka or Kieran Trippier, should be signed to provide competition for the teenager.Dalot has a bright future with the Red Devils8

Luke Shaw

Verdict: KeepAt one point it looked impossible for him to remain at the club and even admitted as much himself. He would have been a free agent in the summer, but signed a new contract in October, keeping him there until 2023.Romelu Lukaku even backed him to win the club’s Player of the Year.

Nemanja Matic

Verdict: SellThe Serb is past his prime and his form is on a downward spiral, which was clear for all to see during the Everton defeat. He must be replaced in the summer with a younger box-to-box midfielder who can occupy a sole position in front of the defence.

Paul Pogba

Verdict: SellPogba undeniably has immense talent but he is far too inconsistent and his baggage is becoming too heavy to handle. Many thought Jose Mourinho was the problem with Pogba, but he flirted with speculation linking him to Real Madrid just days after Solskjaer was appointed – cashing in on the difficult Frenchman may be the best move for the Red Devils.Pogba is reportedly wanted by Real Madrid8

Fred

Verdict: KeepAs much as his first season has been a disaster, Fred could still prove to be a good acquisition in the midfield for Solskjaer. He has shown glimpses of quality on the rare occasion this season but he must be given another season to prove his worth to the club.

Marcus Rashford

Verdict: KeepRashford is integral to United’s future and must be kept at all costs this summer. This season has been his most prolific at Old Trafford, having scored ten goals and, at just 21 years old, he will only get better. The team should be built around the England star.Rashford is integral to United’s future8
Rashford is integral to United’s future

Romelu Lukaku

Verdict: SellThe 75million signing from Everton has scored 28 goals in 64 league appearances for United but he simply doesn’t possess enough quality to lead the line for Solskjaer’s side.Another proven goal scorer with experience at the top level must be signed in the summer.

Anthony Martial

Verdict: KeepHas been another inconsistent member of the United squad this season but he must be kept on as he has bags of talent.Another winger needs to be signed to provide Martial with more competition on the wing.

Juan Mata

Verdict: SellMata has never found the form he once had at Chelsea since moving to Old Trafford, but he has still been a good player for the club. His contract is up at the end of the season and he is seemingly heading back to Spain if reports are correct.Mata has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford8
Mata has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford

Alexis Sanchez

Verdict: SellSanchez was once one of the finest players in the Premier League and his move to United has been nothing short of a disaster. He has lost his confidence in front of goal and it looks irredeemable at United and he must be sold in the summer.

Jesse Lingard

Verdict: KeepLingard is also very inconsistent but when he plays well he is very good member of the United side.Once he finds consistency he can cement a place in the team, but at the moment he should be kept on as a useful squad member but not a starter.

Sergio Romero

Verdict: KeepRomero is perhaps the best no.2 in the league and always puts in a good shift when called upon. The Argentina international must stay on in the the summer unless he wants to leave to get more first team action.20. Sergio Romero (Goalkeeper)8
Romero is a quality no.2

Scott McTominay

Verdict: KeepMcTominay has been a shining light in United’s barren run of form of late and he must be kept on at Old Trafford. The Scot put in a superb display against Barcelona in the first leg of the Champions League tie and if he continues to play well, he could become an important player in the next few seasons.

Andreas Pereira

Verdict: LoanThis season has seen Pereira’s game time improve, with the Brazilian featuring in 13 matches, but a loan move could be best for him.He has the quality to succeed at Old Trafford but some more first team experience may be best for the 23-year-old as at the moment he isn’t good enough to start.Pereira should seek a loan move away from United8
Pereira should seek a loan move away from United

Marcos Rojo

Verdict: SellIt’s been another bad season for the Argentine, who has been hampered significantly by injury and has made just four league appearances. He is now in his fifth season at Old Traford and should be let go in an instant as the move hasn’t worked out for either party.

Eric Bailly

Verdict: SellBailly’s move to United has also been disastrous and the 25-year-old should be allowed to leave in the summer. He has played just 49 times since moving to the club in 2016 and he is also very injury-prone.

Mateo Darmian

Verdict: SellDarmian has struggled to adapt to life at Old Trafford since arriving from Torino in 2015 and should be allowed to leave in the summer. With Dalot now becoming a first-team regular and United looking to recruit another right-back, the future doesn’t look great for the Italian.
