Chelsea’s transfer policy is under more scrutiny after the Football Association launched a review into alleged payments made to Andreas Christensen’s father in 2012.The Blues captured the defender from Danish club Brondby when he was 16 and clubs are prohibited from paying family members of minors.3

The signing of Christensen has come under scrutiny

Football Leaks documents published by Politiken in November claim Chelsea employed Christensen’s father, Sten, as a scout on July 1 2012 – the day the club signed the defender.Sten allegedly received payments totally more than 650,000 over four years, all the while working as a goalkeeping coach at Brondby, rather than a Chelsea scout.An FA spokesman told Goal: “The FA is aware of the allegations and we are reviewing them.” Chelsea have already been hit with a two-window transfer ban by FIFA following a breach of regulations regarding the signing of minors.The club ‘categorically refute’ the decision and plan to appeal, which could see the ban delayed or even lifted.FIFA said in a statement: “Chelsea was found to have breached article 19 of the Regulations in the case of 29 minor players and to have committed several other infringements relating to registration requirements for players.3

The signing of Traore is understood to be one of the key cases in FIFA’s investigation

The club also breached article 18bis of the Regulations in connection with two agreements it concluded concerning minors and which allowed it to influence other clubs in transfer-related matters.The disciplinary committee sanctioned Chelsea with a ban on registering new players at both national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods.This ban applies to the club as a whole with the exception of the womens and futsal teams and does not prevent the release of players.Meanwhile, the Blues responded responded: Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee and will therefore be appealing the decision.3

Chelsea could yet face more action over their transfer policy

The club wishes to emphasise that it respects the important work undertaken by FIFA in relation to the protection of minors and has fully cooperated with FIFA throughout its investigation.Initially, Chelsea FC was charged under Articles 19.1 and 19.3 in relation to 92 players. We welcome the fact that FIFA has accepted that there was no breach in relation to 63 of these players, but the club is extremely disappointed that FIFA has not accepted the clubs submissions in relation to the remaining 29 players.Chelsea FC acted in accordance with the relevant regulations and will shortly be submitting its appeal to FIFA.
