Andre Villas-Boas has revealed Tottenham Hotspur were ‘minutes’ from signing Joao Moutinho.The Portugal international was coached by Villas-Boas at Porto and in August 2012 nearly joined the north London club.3

Andre Villas-Boas was in charge of Spurs for 18 months

During a question and answer session, the 41-year-old was asked who he came closest to signing during his stint as manager: I think it has to be Joao Moutinho of course. We were so close to signing him. I think we only missed him by a few minutes.We were exchanging information with Porto down to the last minute of the transfer window on August 31 and in the end we missed a great player, which is a pity of course.Moutinho stayed at Porto and in 2013 joined Monaco in a combined deal with James Rodriguez.He stayed with the Ligue 1 club until 2018 when he signed for Wolves.Villas-Boas also revealed his favourite match during his 18-month reign at White Hart Lane.3

Villas-Boas enjoyed coaching Gareth Bale

The 41-year-old also coached Gareth Bale at Spurs and offered some insight as to what it was like working with the Wales international, who is now at Real Madrid.Coaching Gareth Bale was fantastic, of course, Villas-Boas said. The qualities he has with the ball were amazing.He was looking for his best position and in the end we tried him as a striker in a 4-4-2 and he did fantastically well. Special player, special character. Villas-Boas has been out of work since leaving Shanghai SIPG in November 2017.He competed in the 2018 Dakar Rally but expects to be back in charge of a side soon.Yes hopefully come back to management soon with a big team. Lets see what happens in June.Im looking forward to it.
